By using these renewables, reliance on imported fossil fuels like coal and crude oil can be significantly lowered. As a means to address this, the European Union (EU) along with the national governments, set clear-cut objectives to guide their environmental policies up to 2020 and beyond. This is to complement their vision of propelling its 28 members into a greener and sustainable Europe.
Since the policies’ conception, almost half of these 28 EU members have hit (or close to hitting) their targets for the year 2020. The top performing ones are Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Italy, Hungary, Lithuania, Romania and Sweden. Those who are closing in are Austria, Greece and Latvia, but the rest of the member-states are lagging behind.
There is also a decline in the trend for the past years. While the rate of the overall renewables consumed doubled since then, adoption rate is slowly on breaks. Surely, other member states must make up for it and be hot on their heels.
